Newsom Announces California's New Budget: Free Meals and Enhanced Healthcare

California Governor Gavin Newsom, alongside legislative leaders, has unveiled the state's new budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year, prioritizing free school meals and enhanced healthcare accessibility. The announcement highlights a commitment to strengthening the state's social services and economic foundation.

The budget achieves a zero-deficit status for both the current and upcoming fiscal years. A significant portion, over $6 billion, has been allocated to a reserve holding account. The administration emphasized that this fiscal plan not only maintains California's progress but also prepares for the future and shields vulnerable communities from what they term "cruel attacks" by Donald Trump, referring to federal budget reductions.

Governor Newsom underscored the budget's direct impact on residents' daily lives. "In California, we support working families, create more opportunities, and build safer, healthier communities," he stated. "This is how we maintain the state as the engine of the American economy and a place where everyone has the opportunity to succeed."

Significant investments are earmarked for health and education. The budget includes substantial funding to improve access to healthcare services across the state. Beyond these core areas, the budget addresses other key government functions, including economy and small businesses, housing and disaster response, and elections and governance, aiming to foster economic growth and improve public services.
