NFF names Eguavoen interim coach of Super Falcons

Augustine Eguavoen has been given the immediate task of guiding Nigeria's Super Falcons through their first step toward the 2028 Olympic Games.

The Nigeria Football Federation appointed the former Super Eagles head coach on an interim basis for the October qualifying fixtures against Comoros. The move follows the dismissal of Justin Madugu and his technical crew on Aug. 17, after Nigeria's disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations and its failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Nigeria entered the WAFCON as defending champions but lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the quarter-finals. The Falcons then suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the World Cup qualifying play-off, ending Nigeria's record of appearing at every Women's World Cup since the tournament began in 1991.

Eguavoen, popularly known as Cerezo, will be assisted by Nasarawa Amazons coach Christopher Danjuma. Former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa will handle goalkeepers, while former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf joins as an assistant coach. Eguavoen previously led Nigeria's senior men's team to a bronze medal at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. Danjuma coached Nigeria's Falconets at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica, while Yusuf won 68 caps and represented Nigeria at four WAFCON tournaments, three Women's World Cups and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The two matches against Comoros will take place at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo on Oct. 9 and 13. Nigeria received a bye into the second round as one of the competition's three highest-ranked teams. Comoros advanced after beating Sudan 30-0 on aggregate. Nigeria must win through four two-legged knockout rounds to claim one of Africa's two Olympic places.
