Niger agency warns of flood risk from cracks at Kaduna dam

Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has issued a stark warning about the Kangimi Dam in Kaduna State, citing structural distress and visible cracks. The agency fears a potential dam failure could trigger catastrophic flooding for communities downstream in Kaduna, Niger states, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The development needs prompt attention, especially during the ongoing rainy season and rising flood risks nationwide.

Abdullahi Arah, NSEMA's director-general, emphasized the urgent need for a technical assessment and immediate preventive actions, particularly with the ongoing rainy season and heightened flood risks nationwide. He explained that a major structural collapse could lead to a sudden, massive water release, causing rapid flooding and endangering lives, infrastructure, and property.

NSEMA has formally requested intervention from the federal government, Kaduna State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and other relevant bodies, including hydrological and meteorological agencies, and security forces. The agency also called for comprehensive downstream flood-risk assessments, identification of vulnerable areas, and the implementation of mitigation strategies.

A major structural failure could cause the sudden release of a large amount of water, leading to rapid flooding and potential damage to communities, infrastructure, and other downstream assets.

Furthermore, NSEMA stressed the importance of activating effective early-warning systems and emergency evacuation plans, including clearly marked safe locations and routes. The agency highlighted the necessity of close coordination between Kaduna, Niger, and the FCT for a unified response. Residents in potentially affected areas are advised to remain calm but vigilant, avoid waterways during heavy rainfall, and prepare by identifying safe places and evacuation routes.
