Nigeria, AfDB push for African control of mineral wealth, local value addition

Nigeria, in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB), is championing a new vision for Africa: asserting greater continental control over its vast mineral wealth. This strategic push moves beyond simple resource extraction, focusing instead on harnessing these resources for comprehensive economic development.

Nigeria's Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, who also chairs the Africa Mineral Strategy Group (AMSG), articulated the core objective: Africa must transition from being a mere exporter of raw minerals. The emphasis is now firmly placed on developing local capacity for value addition, processing, and industrialization. This approach is seen as crucial for achieving genuine economic independence.

The initiative underscores a growing sentiment across the continent to move up the global value chain. By processing minerals domestically, African nations aim to capture more economic benefits, create jobs, and foster technological advancement, thereby reducing reliance on external markets and strengthening their economic sovereignty.
