Nigeria and Niger Customs seek stronger trade through Kamba border

Nigeria and Niger are looking to the Kamba, Tungan Gyado corridor to carry more legitimate trade as other regional routes face disruption.

The Nigeria Customs Service’s Kebbi Area Command hosted Nigerien Customs officials on Thursday to discuss problems affecting commerce along the border. The meeting focused on facilitating legal trade, increasing revenue and easing pressure on communities on both sides.

Abdoulaye Vincent, comptroller of Douanes du Dosso in Niger, called for closer cooperation with Nigerian Customs, especially to make the Kamba route more effective. He said insecurity along routes through Burkina Faso and Togo, as well as the prevailing diplomatic situation with Benin, had disrupted trade.

Vincent appealed for more legitimate exports through Kamba. In his response, Kebbi Customs Area Controller Mahmoud Ibrahim reaffirmed the command’s commitment to cooperation and promised to educate stakeholders about customs procedures and encourage greater use of the corridor. He said increased trade could “create jobs and improve livelihoods in border communities.”

Ibrahim also announced plans to visit the Nigerien Customs Command in Dosso. The meeting ended with the Sarkin Shikon Kamba thanking the customs controller for supporting a conducive environment for legitimate business and expressing hope for the partnership’s success.
