Nigeria Approves Acquisition of Two Communications Satellites

Nigeria's Federal Executive Council has given the green light for the acquisition of two advanced communication satellites, NIGCOMSAT 2A and NIGCOMSAT 2B. This move signifies a major step in the nation's drive to bolster its digital infrastructure and enhance communication services across the country.

The Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) will spearhead the implementation of this project under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy. The new satellites are designed to significantly expand Nigeria's satellite capacity. They will strengthen broadband services, broadcasting capabilities, enterprise communications, and other critical communication needs.

The federal government has moved the acquisition and deployment of NIGCOMSAT – 2A and NIGCOMSAT – 2B into the next phase following Federal Executive Council approval for the two next – generation High – Throughput Communication Satellites.

NIGCOMSAT's Managing Director, Jane Egerton-Idehen, hailed the approval as a significant milestone, emphasizing its role in strengthening national satellite capacity and expanding connectivity. She stated that the investment would be translated into measurable value for Nigerians and position NIGCOMSAT for greater impact in the global satellite and digital economy. The additional capacity is expected to support high-capacity broadband, enterprise connectivity, government services, and emerging digital applications.

This initiative is a key component of the federal government's broader strategy to invest in digital infrastructure and national connectivity. It directly supports President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's "Renewed Hope Agenda." The deployment of these satellites is particularly crucial for extending connectivity to underserved, unserved, and hard-to-reach communities, thereby strengthening national communications resilience.
