Nigeria Democratic Congress Strengthens Party Supremacy Over Elected Officials

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has moved to solidify its authority by adopting measures to strengthen internal structures and entrench party supremacy. During its second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on June 7, the party passed key resolutions that reaffirm its ultimate control over elected officials.

The party remains supreme, and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party.

Under the new framework, all government officials elected on the NDC platform will be required to consult with party structures before making significant policy decisions, appointing individuals to positions, or implementing programs. Exceptions are made only for personal staff appointments. Furthermore, the NDC has directed that all affiliated groups and non-governmental organizations linked to the party must operate under its supervision, preventing independent functioning outside established party structures. The NDC declared its commitment to fostering a robust and enduring political institution, distinguishing itself from platforms driven by individual interests. The party urged members to prioritize loyalty to the NDC and the national interest above personal ambitions, stating, "The NDC is being built as an institution, not a personality cult, political movement, or Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to be used and discarded."

Accountability standards have also been tightened. Party officers and candidates will face strict scrutiny. Party funds must be exclusively used for party business. All campaign-related funding received by candidates at any level must be fully disclosed to the appropriate party organs. Funds must be channeled through dedicated party campaign accounts, including presidential and gubernatorial accounts where applicable, ensuring transparency and control over financial resources.

For candidates, there must also be strict accountability for all funding received. Monies sourced by candidates at all levels, and contributions made by candidates to campaign accounts, must be fully disclosed to the party at the appropriate levels (local government, state, zonal, and national). Such funds must be received through dedicated party campaign accounts, including presidential and gubernatorial campaign accounts of the party, as applicable.
