Nigeria dismisses 4 senior police officers, sanctions 31 others for misconduct

Nigeria's Police Service Commission (PSC) has taken decisive action against misconduct, dismissing four senior police officers and imposing disciplinary sanctions on 31 others. This move underscores the commission's dedication to fostering discipline and accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.

The PSC announced these decisions following its plenary meeting in Abuja. The four dismissed officers were found guilty of gross misconduct, unprofessional conduct, and actions unbecoming of public servants. Beyond dismissals, the commission approved a range of other disciplinary measures. Ten senior officers faced demotions, including three Superintendents reduced to Deputy Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents to Assistant Superintendents, and five Assistant Superintendents to Inspectors.

Further sanctions included the compulsory retirement of two officers in the public interest. Additionally, ten officers received severe reprimands, five got reprimands, three were issued warning letters, and one received a letter of advice. The commission also cleared seven officers, exonerating them of any wrongdoing.

Chairman of the PSC, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (retd), emphasized the board's strict stance. "The current Board of the PSC under my watch will not condone any form of misconduct by police officers," he stated. "The Commission will continue to uphold discipline in the Force and match all forms of misconduct with commensurate disciplinary actions." He also assured that hard work would be recognized through the established reward system.
