Nigeria Distributes Over 34.7 Million Mosquito Nets in Anti-Malaria Campaign

Nigeria's fight against malaria achieved a significant milestone in 2025 with the distribution of over 34.7 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) across 10 states. This extensive operation was coordinated by the Society for Family Health (SFH) in collaboration with the National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP), Catholic Relief Services, and support from the Global Fund and other development partners.

Christopher Dangana, Project Director of the Supply Chain Initiative (SCI), described the distribution as one of the most efficient public health logistics operations in recent years. "The distribution of over 34.7 million nets is not just a logistical achievement; it is a direct protection for millions of Nigerians at risk of malaria," Dangana stated. A total of 36.5 million nets were moved from state warehouses to local government stores, with 34.7 million reaching community distribution points for household access.

The initiative employed a digital Logistics Tracking Application for real-time monitoring of consignments, enhancing transparency and accountability. This system, initially piloted in 2024 and expanded in 2025, tracked shipments through multiple stages and generated electronic proof of delivery. Programme managers noted that the technology provided verifiable data on commodity movement to donors and health authorities.

Despite the success, the operation encountered logistical hurdles, including poor road networks, flooding, and difficult terrain in some regions. In Delta State's riverine areas, transport teams utilized a combination of trucks and boats, with some consignments requiring multiple transfers. Dangana affirmed that delivery targets were met even in hard-to-reach areas. "Even with the challenges of terrain and infrastructure, we ensured that every targeted community received its allocation," he said.

Malaria remains a critical global health issue, with Africa bearing the highest burden, particularly affecting pregnant women and children under five. Mosquito nets are a vital preventive tool. Stakeholders emphasized that the campaign's success highlights the importance of strong partnerships in public health interventions, demonstrating the impact of efficient supply chains on health outcomes.
