Nigeria election: Over 60 Accord Party members detained, campaign alleges illegal arrests

The campaign organization for Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke claims over 60 Accord Party leaders and members are being held by police. Adeleke is seeking re-election in the upcoming August 15 governorship election.

The Imole Campaign Council has labeled the detentions illegal and is demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all party members. Bamidele Sallam, chairman of the campaign's Media and Publicity Sub-Committee, urged the Inspector-General of Police to intervene.

"We demand immediate release of over 60 Accord leaders and members under illegal detention, including an Accord candidate for House of Representatives for Ijesa South, identified simply as Hon. Alaba," Sallam stated. He emphasized the need for urgent action to ensure a free and fair election, referencing directives from the Inspector-General and the President.

This call follows a recent petition to the National Human Rights Commission regarding the alleged unlawful arrest and detention of Adeleke's supporters. The campaign spokesperson accused the Osun State police of intimidating voters ahead of the election. The campaign council has also previously alerted President Bola Tinubu to the alleged intimidation tactics.

Political tensions are high in Osun State, with recent violent clashes reported between rival groups, including members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers. Separately, police raided the residence of the Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaye, arresting him and five others over alleged vote-buying, though Igbalaye was later released.
