Nigeria Labour Congress Directs Indefinite Strike at FUT Teaching Hospital Over Agreement Non-Implementation

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have directed their members at the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital (FUTATH) to begin an indefinite strike starting Sunday, July 26, 2026. This action follows the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the hospital's management over the non-implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Following the expiration of the seven (7) days ultimatum without any resolution, the Organized Labour in Ondo State hereby directs all affiliates of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in FUTATH to commence an indefinite industrial action.

The unions' notice, jointly signed by the Ondo State Chairmen of NLC and TUC, Ademola Olapade and Clement Fatuase respectively, instructed all affiliated health sector unions to withdraw their services. The strike is set to commence at midnight on Sunday and continue until further notice. A peaceful picketing of the hospital is also planned for Monday, July 27, 2026.

Accordingly, all affiliates are to withdraw their services with effect from 12:00 midnight on Sunday, 26th July, 2026, until further notice.

The core demands include the immediate enrollment of all authenticated workers onto the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) without discrimination. Additionally, the unions seek an end to any practices that compel workers to renounce their lawful trade union membership, a halt to alleged intimidation and victimization of labor leaders and members, and full adherence to the terms of the MoU.

Furthermore, all affiliate unions are directed to mobilize their members for a peaceful picketing of FUTATH on Monday, 27th July, 2026, in support of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and the protection of the rights of the affected workers

Despite efforts by the Federal Ministry of Health to mediate, the unions failed to attend a scheduled reconciliatory meeting on Friday, requesting a new date. The unions stated that the strike became necessary due to the authorities' failure to address their demands after the ultimatum expired, emphasizing that "An Injury to One is an Injury to All."
