Nigeria: Man Accused of Witchcraft Sets Mother on Fire

A man in Nigeria's Cross River State has allegedly set his mother on fire, accusing her of witchcraft and causing the death of his daughter. The horrific incident occurred on Friday, August 14, 2026, in Ojuah, Akamkpa Local Government Area.

The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Etim, reportedly went to his mother's residence, Mrs. Atim Eyo, carrying fuel and a lighter. He confronted her shortly after his daughter's death that same day, accusing her of being responsible. Eyewitnesses reported that Etim attempted to strangle his mother before pouring fuel on her and igniting it.

The situation escalated when Etim stood up from his chair and attempted to strangle his mother. Etim confronted his mother and accused her of causing the child’s death.

Neighbors intervened and managed to extinguish the flames, rushing the victim to a hospital for treatment. The Cross River State Police Command confirmed the incident, with spokesperson ASP Sunday Eitokpah stating that efforts are underway to apprehend Etim, who remains at large.

"The unfortunate incident did occur as alleged in the report," Eitokpah said in a statement. "However, the Police Command is currently making concerted efforts to apprehend the suspect, who is presently at large, to enable him to answer to the allegations against him."
