Nigeria needs Jakande’s brand of leadership, Sanwo-Olu, Olurode say

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside academics Professors Lai Olurode and Sylvester Akhaine, have called on Nigerians, particularly public officeholders, to draw inspiration from the late former Governor of Lagos State, Lateef Jakande. They described Jakande's enduring legacy of selfless service, integrity, patriotism, and people-centered governance as a crucial model for Nigeria's development.

He was one of those journalists who showed the world that we are not just about writing or speaking. We are not only about newspapers or electronic media; we can also be good administrators and public servants.

Speaking at the 4th Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture, organized by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), the speakers lauded Jakande's significant achievements across education, healthcare, and housing sectors. They emphasized his unwavering commitment to Nigeria and his personal contentment, presenting these qualities as examples of purposeful leadership. Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, noted how Jakande exemplified the potential for journalists to excel in governance, demonstrating discipline, vision, and competence.

He showed that journalism teaches you to do anything once you set your mind to it. If you make a journalist a governor, he will be a better governor.

Professor Olurode, who chaired the event, highlighted Jakande's profound belief in Nigeria's potential, recalling that the former governor never sought medical treatment abroad. Olurode stated, "Lateef Jakande believed strongly in Nigeria." He urged Nigerians to reflect on their contributions to national development rather than solely focusing on personal gains. The NGE President, Eze Anaba, added that the memorial lecture series aims to preserve Jakande's ideals of ethical journalism, exemplary leadership, and dedicated public service, principles that guided the Guild's founding members.
