Nigeria Police Deploy Deputy Inspector General to Osun for Election Security

Nigeria's Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has deployed Deputy Inspector General Ishyaku Mohammed to Osun State to coordinate security operations for the governorship election scheduled for Saturday. This deployment supplements the approximately 15,000 operatives and a Commissioner of Police previously mobilized for the poll.

The Inspector-General's office stated that DIG Mohammed's presence aims to ensure a peaceful, secure, and credible electoral process across the state. He will coordinate the police component of the election security arrangements and collaborate with other agencies under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES). Assistant Inspectors General and Commissioners of Police will also be deployed across the three senatorial districts to supervise operations, enhance intelligence-led policing, and ensure swift responses to emerging threats.

The Force assured that adequate security measures are in place to protect voters, Independent National Electoral Commission personnel, election materials, polling units, collation centers, observers, and media practitioners. The IGP issued a stern warning to political actors and their supporters planning to disrupt the election, emphasizing that ballot snatching, voter intimidation, and political thuggery will lead to arrest and prosecution.

Furthermore, the police reiterated the ban on armed escorts and unauthorized individuals accompanying political figures or VIPs to polling or collation centers on election day. State-established security outfits, quasi-security groups, and private security organizations are also barred from election security duties. The Nigeria Police Force reassured residents and voters of adequate security, urging eligible citizens to exercise their franchise peacefully and without fear.
