Nigeria police launch app for reporting suspected fraud

Nigerians can now report suspected financial fraud through a police app that accepts evidence, tracks cases and provides feedback.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu launched the Nigeria Police Force Vigilant App and the NPF-MTN Closed User Group Network at the force’s conference centre in Jabi, Abuja. The app was developed by the police ICT department with stakeholders in the financial services sector.

The citizen-facing platform allows users to submit fraud complaints and upload supporting material. It also enables them to follow the progress of their cases. Police said the system will coordinate with relevant institutions under existing laws and procedures.

The separate MTN network gives police officers nationwide secure and affordable on-net communication. The force said it should improve emergency coordination and operational response.

Disu called the initiatives a “practical step in the Force’s digital transformation drive.” He said the app would strengthen public engagement, while the closed network would improve communication inside the force. He also said technology must serve professional policing lawfully and responsibly, with safeguards for citizens’ rights, privacy, data protection and accountability.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Fayoade Mustapha urged Nigerians to download the app from Google Play and the Apple App Store and use it responsibly. Representatives of the Central Bank of Nigeria, financial institutions, fintech companies, MTN Nigeria and other partner organizations attended the launch.
