The league's return signifies a new commercial era, underscored by a three-year, $7.5 million title sponsorship agreement with EuroMatch, ending a prolonged period without a conventional title sponsor.

Shooting Stars secured a 2-1 victory against newly promoted Inter Lagos in the opening South-West clash at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan. The remaining nine Matchday 1 fixtures are scheduled for Sunday. Defending champions Rangers International, who narrowly edged Rivers United by a single point last season, face a considerably more difficult task in retaining their crown. Their title defense will be complicated by participation in the CAF Champions League.

Financial incentives for clubs are significantly higher this season, with 60% of the annual sponsorship proceeds allocated to participating clubs. However, last season served as a stark reminder that past success and reputation offer no guarantees. Remo Stars, champions in 2024/25, were relegated in 2025/26, while Rangers leveraged a one-point lead over Rivers United to claim their ninth league title on the final day.

Rangers International, who finished with 68 points last season, must now navigate the pressures of defending their title while also competing in continental competitions. Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu will need to effectively rotate his squad to manage fatigue and prevent injuries. The club will also temporarily relocate its home matches to the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta due to ongoing renovations at their Enugu stadium. Rangers begin their league campaign against Katsina United on Sunday, while Rivers United and other contenders like Shooting Stars and Ikorodu City will be vying for the championship.
