The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is undergoing a significant transformation, quietly redefining its operational focus through intelligence-led strategies. Under the supervision of Hon (Dr) Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and the leadership of Commandant General Abubakar Audi, the corps is increasingly being recognized alongside other national security agencies.

While national security conversations often center on terrorism and banditry, the NSCDC's recent operations highlight a crucial focus on economic sabotage. This includes tackling the systematic vandalism of critical infrastructure, illegal mining, illicit arms manufacturing, and the financial networks supporting these activities. A recent operation dismantled a syndicate stealing electricity and telecommunications cables, demonstrating a commitment to addressing less visible but damaging crimes.

This strategic shift is further evidenced by the NSCDC's focus on dismantling criminal enterprises at a higher level. The arrest of suspected major buyers of vandalized materials, rather than just street-level thieves, signifies a more sophisticated understanding of organized crime. Furthermore, the court-backed sealing of facilities belonging to Inner Galaxy Steel Company and Jiuxing Integrity Industrial Ltd over allegations of processing stolen infrastructure marks a notable departure from solely pursuing low-level offenders. The discovery of a local arms manufacturing factory in Yobe State also underscores the internal sources fueling insecurity.

The intelligence-led approach extends to combating transnational criminal networks, as seen in arrests of kidnapping suspects including foreign nationals. This requires enhanced intelligence sharing among security agencies and neighboring countries, indicating a broader strategy to address complex security challenges.
