Nigeria's Jimoh Ibrahim Elected Chair of UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, Pledges Reform, Fiscal Discipline

Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, has been elected Chairman of the Fifth Committee of the UN General Assembly. This appointment places Nigeria at the head of a key UN body tasked with overseeing administrative and budgetary matters.

In his acceptance speech, Ibrahim acknowledged the significant responsibility that comes with the position, particularly during a period marked by financial constraints, ongoing institutional reforms, and complex global challenges. The Fifth Committee's oversight of the UN's administrative and budgetary operations is fundamental to the organization's capacity to execute its mandates worldwide.

Ibrahim emphasized the need for collective responsibility and decisive action to manage the committee's agenda effectively. He noted that delayed contributions from member states have contributed to a budget deficit running into billions of dollars. He urged all member states to fulfill their financial obligations promptly, stressing that the UN's sustainability hinges on predictable and adequate funding. "The challenges before us require collective responsibility and decisive action," he stated, highlighting that efficient resource management is essential for maintaining the UN's global impact.

The Nigerian diplomat also underscored the importance of the UN reform agenda, viewing it as an opportunity to enhance efficiency, accountability, and overall institutional effectiveness. He pointed to escalating geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty, poverty, insecurity, and rapid technological changes as issues demanding coordinated international responses. Ibrahim stressed that leadership, innovation, and knowledge-driven policies are crucial for addressing these complex challenges and advancing global development. He further pledged to foster consensus-building among the UN's 193 member states, ensuring that diverse perspectives are considered in the committee's decision-making processes.
