Nigeria's Labour Party names female veteran nurse as vice presidential candidate for 2027 election

The Labour Party (LP) has unveiled Hajia Bintu Konto, a female veteran nurse, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. She will form the presidential ticket with Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, the party's presidential candidate.

The decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders and reflected our commitment to presenting a ticket that embodies competence, integrity, inclusiveness, patriotism and proven capacity for public service.

Ken Asogwa, the LP's National Publicity Secretary, announced the decision in Abuja, stating it followed extensive consultations. He emphasized that the ticket embodies competence, integrity, inclusiveness, patriotism, and a proven capacity for public service. Asogwa highlighted Konto's experience in governance, humanitarian coordination, women's empowerment, and public policy, as well as her fluency in multiple Nigerian languages, as strengths that will bolster the party's presidential bid.

The nomination is seen as a significant move towards gender inclusion and national unity. The party believes the Okereke-Konto ticket represents a new generation of leadership committed to restoring hope, strengthening institutions, reviving the economy, improving security, and ensuring responsible governance. The LP urged Nigerians to support their ticket ahead of the crucial 2027 election.

Her experience in governance engagement, humanitarian coordination, women’s empowerment and public policy, as well as her fluency in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura, would strengthen the party’s presidential ticket.

Konto, who hails from northern Nigeria, is a trained nurse, midwife, health educator, and public health specialist with a master's degree. She possesses over three decades of experience in healthcare delivery, humanitarian intervention, and community development, particularly in conflict-affected areas of northern Nigeria. Her background includes serving as a Community and Government Liaison Programme Officer for Catholic Relief Services, where she collaborated with various stakeholders on health and humanitarian programs.

This announcement comes just a day after the All Progressives Congress (APC) confirmed Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu's running mate for the 2027 election. The APC's nomination was officially submitted to the party's National Chairman for onward transmission to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
