Nigeria's NDDC begins reconstruction of 15.4km failed section on Benin-Sapele Expressway

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commenced the reconstruction of a critical 15.4-kilometer stretch of the Benin-Sapele Expressway that had fallen into disrepair. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori lauded the initiative, calling it a "major intervention" that will significantly ease traffic flow and stimulate economic activities within the state.

The flag-off ceremony took place at Amukpe Roundabout in Sapele, Delta State. Governor Oborevwori, represented by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, highlighted the project as a testament to effective collaboration among government agencies in tackling infrastructure deficits in the Niger Delta region. Aniagwu noted the state government's proactive approach, including substantial investments in federal road corridors, to address the suffering of Deltans.

Aniagwu detailed the state's significant spending, exceeding N300 billion, on federal roads to improve conditions and reduce motorist hardship. Projects mentioned include dual carriageways, bridges, and flyovers in key areas like Warri and Agbor. He welcomed the NDDC's intervention on the Benin-Sapele Expressway, anticipating its completion would enhance transportation links not only within Delta but also for other states along the vital East-West corridor. He also urged public cooperation with contractors and warned against the vandalism of public infrastructure.

Chiedu Ebie, Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, stated that the reconstruction was initiated following a directive from President Bola Tinubu to address the severe hardship faced by motorists. Ebie expressed the NDDC's determination to complete the project swiftly, with two contractors working from opposite ends to expedite the process. He emphasized the expressway's importance as a major economic artery connecting the South-South geopolitical zone to other parts of Nigeria. Ebie also revealed that the NDDC is taking steps to terminate and re-award a contract for the Abraka section of the road.
