Nigeria's NEPC empowers retirees to become exporters through new initiative

Retirement in Nigeria has long been associated with anxiety, financial instability, and a struggle for survival. However, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) is actively working to change this narrative with its Sustainable Opportunities for Active Retirement (SOAR) Initiative.

Led by Nonye Ayeni, NEPC aims to transform retirement from an endpoint into a launchpad for enterprise. The SOAR Initiative specifically targets civil servants within three years of retirement, equipping them with practical skills to engage in Nigeria's growing non-oil export sector. Ayeni emphasizes that retirement should be viewed as a new chapter where accumulated experience and leadership can foster sustainable businesses.

The program offers comprehensive training in export procedures, global quality standards, and financing options. Beyond classroom sessions, retirees receive crucial mentorship from experienced exporters and industry experts, acknowledging that business success relies on knowledge, networks, and sustained guidance. This holistic approach aims to empower retirees to build successful enterprises and contribute to Nigeria's economy.

Internally, Ayeni has driven significant reforms at NEPC, promoting meritocracy, transparency, and professional development. These changes have led to promotions across various staff levels and increased participation in international programs to enhance global best practices. Infrastructure upgrades, such as solar power installations in state offices, further bolster the council's capacity to support exporters nationwide. These efforts collectively aim to create a more robust and effective export promotion ecosystem.
