Nigeria's security challenges demand bold, fresh thinking, Reps Speaker says

Nigeria's worsening security challenges demand bold, fresh thinking and legislative innovation, stated Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen. He emphasized that past strategies have proven insufficient in tackling the nation's complex threats.

Speaking at the opening of a two-day public hearing on defense-related bills, organized by the House Committee on Defence, Mr. Tajudeen highlighted the urgency for new approaches. The House is currently considering a package of defense reform bills designed to bolster military institutions, enhance personnel welfare, and better position the Armed Forces to confront evolving security threats.

Mr. Tajudeen noted the immense pressure on the military, which is contending with various security issues across the country. These include insurgency in the Northeast, banditry and kidnapping in the Northwest, farmer-herder conflicts in the North-central, and separatist agitations in the Southeast. Emerging threats like maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, cyber warfare, and the convergence of organized crime and terrorism further complicate the security landscape.

The proposed legislation aims to modernize military administration, improve operational effectiveness, and foster a more resilient and inclusive defense institution. Key proposals include repealing the current Armed Forces Act to introduce a new Nigerian Military Force Act, establishing an Armed Forces Farms and Ranches Scheme Bill to support food security, a bill promoting gender representation, and legislation to create a Veterans' Federation of Nigeria for improved welfare of retired personnel. Additional bills focus on military education, doctrine development, and healthcare services.

The Speaker urged active participation from stakeholders, including military personnel, civil society organizations, legal practitioners, veterans, and gender advocates, to contribute constructive recommendations during the public hearing.
