Nigeria's Senate Prioritizes State Police Amendment Amidst Security Crisis

Nigerian senators are prioritizing constitutional amendments to establish state police forces, citing the nation's escalating insecurity as an urgent national priority. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele stated that insecurity remains the foremost concern for Nigerians, making the state police proposal critical. He emphasized that the 10th National Assembly cannot afford to overlook issues related to state police, especially as security challenges continue to threaten lives and property across the country. Senator Abba Moro, the Senate Minority Leader, dismissed suggestions that other constitutional amendment proposals have been shelved. He explained that the Constitution Review Committee has segmented the amendment process to fast-track urgent matters like state police. "We're taking the state police now, while other constitutional amendment proposals will follow very soon," Moro said, predicting other proposals would be addressed within months. Senator Ali Ndume, who chairs the Senate Committee on Army, echoed the sentiment, stating security is the government's primary responsibility. Ndume has long advocated for both state and local government police to bolster grassroots security, arguing that the constitution can be amended to meet the country's current needs. He urged constructive suggestions from the public and media to improve the proposed policing framework. Senator Anthony Ani also supported prioritizing security, calling it the most pressing constitutional issue that needs immediate attention before others.
