Nigeria: School worker arrested for impregnating 14-year-old pupil

Authorities in Kwara State, Nigeria, have arrested a 43-year-old non-teaching staff member of a public primary school for allegedly sexually abusing a 14-year-old pupil. The suspect, identified as Amuda Olubukola, is accused of repeatedly assaulting the Primary 4 student within his school office.

The arrest followed a complaint received by the Gender Unit of the Command, which triggered an immediate investigation into the disturbing allegation.

The illicit acts reportedly came to light when the victim's mother noticed physical changes in her daughter and sought help from law enforcement. The victim allegedly told investigators that Olubukola promised to marry her and used coercion, including covering her mouth, to prevent her from raising an alarm during the assaults.

The victim further alleged that the suspect repeatedly promised to marry her before allegedly subjecting her to the abuse. During the incidents, he covered her mouth to prevent her from raising an alarm.

Confirming the arrest, the Kwara State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) stated that its Gender Unit acted swiftly upon receiving a formal complaint. The suspect, during interrogation, admitted to the encounters but attributed his actions to "the work of the devil."

The case came to light after the victim’s mother reported that her daughter had allegedly become pregnant as a result of the abuse.

NSCDC State Commandant Abbas Mohammed expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing that schools should be safe havens for children. He vowed that the suspect would face the full weight of the law, with judicial proceedings imminent as the investigation nears completion.
