Nigeria Strengthens Airport Ebola Preparedness Measures

Nigeria's Federal Airports Authority (FAAN) is taking a proactive stance to bolster defenses against the potential spread of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) through its airports. In collaboration with key health and safety agencies, FAAN has reinforced surveillance and preventive protocols, demonstrating a commitment to safeguarding public health.

A recent workshop in Lagos brought together health authorities and stakeholders to review and strengthen existing preparedness strategies. The focus is on enhancing response mechanisms and containment procedures to prevent any possible outbreak within the country. Surveillance activities have been significantly ramped up, particularly at international gateways.

Special attention is being paid to passengers arriving from regions identified as high-risk, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and surrounding areas currently experiencing Ebola outbreaks. The Port Health Services (PHS) confirmed that advanced screening and monitoring systems are operational at all entry points. These include rigorous temperature checks and the implementation of QR code scanners to streamline health declarations and subsequent follow-up procedures for travelers.

Stakeholders underscored the critical need for inter-agency collaboration among government bodies, aviation authorities, health institutions, and security forces. This coordinated effort is deemed essential for the rapid detection, reporting, and effective response to any suspected Ebola cases. The deployment of QR code scanners aims to facilitate electronic health information submission, improving efficiency in passenger monitoring and contact tracing efforts.
