Nigeria targets improved electricity supply with renewable energy deployment

Nigeria is intensifying efforts to bolster its electricity supply by strategically increasing the deployment and sustainable management of renewable energy assets across the country. The Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, announced this initiative on Wednesday during the launch of the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) and a stakeholder media engagement session.

Renewable energy is not peripheral to Nigeria’s power architecture. It is an increasingly important pillar of our power technology deployment strategy.

Tegbe emphasized that renewable energy is a crucial pillar in Nigeria's power strategy, moving beyond a peripheral role. The government's objective is to create a diversified power system that integrates grid supply, embedded generation, mini-grids, distributed renewables, and storage solutions. These assets will be deployed closer to demand centers, aiming to improve access, strengthen public institutions, and build resilience within the broader power system.

The establishment of RAMCO is a key component of wider reforms designed to enhance the efficient and sustainable management of power infrastructure. The company will serve as a vital link between infrastructure development and long-term sustainability, bridging public investment with private capital. Its mandate includes preserving the value of renewable energy assets, improving their uptime and availability, setting transparent performance benchmarks, and enforcing credible maintenance and replacement regimes.

Nigeria has long grappled with the "embarrassing paradox" of possessing abundant power assets and energy resources yet suffering from unreliable electricity supply. Tegbe stated that RAMCO's success will be measured not just by the number of assets it manages, but by their operational performance, the reliability of the electricity delivered, the improved functioning of public institutions due to consistent power, and the additional investment attracted to the sector.
