Nigeria, UK deepen security partnership, target terrorism, cyber threats

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have pledged to deepen their security and defense cooperation, aiming to bolster efforts against terrorism, cyber threats, and other transnational crimes. This commitment emerged from the Fourth United Kingdom–Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue, held in Abuja on June 23 and 24, 2026.

The dialogue, co-chaired by Nigeria’s National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and the UK's National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, brought together senior officials from both governments. The resulting communiqué highlighted a mutual commitment to strengthening collaboration based on accountability and partnership. Key areas of focus include counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, maritime security, intelligence sharing, and the fight against fraud and illicit finance.

On defense, the UK reaffirmed its support for Nigeria's Armed Forces, offering joint doctrine development, training, and technical advice to counter threats like Uncrewed Air Systems and Improvised Explosive Devices. Both countries also agreed to enhance defense trade relations and support Nigeria’s maritime domain awareness and hydrography initiatives. They specifically committed to aligning efforts to combat illicit maritime activities and transnational threats in the Gulf of Guinea, recognizing the importance of regional stability and secure trade routes.

Furthermore, Nigeria and the UK will establish a structured framework for cooperation on cybersecurity and hybrid threats. This includes intelligence sharing, capability building, and strategies to combat misinformation and cyber-attacks. The communiqué also noted their shared commitment to intensifying efforts against terrorism and violent extremism through improved intelligence exchange and multi-agency coordination. The UK also pledged continued support for aviation security and Nigeria's anti-kidnap initiatives.
