Nigeria warns parents after uncovering drugs hidden in cookies and gummies

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to parents, urging them to be vigilant about their children's consumption of cookies and gummies. The agency revealed that some of these popular snacks may contain illicit substances being smuggled into the country.

NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, stated that recent seizures have uncovered attempts by criminal elements to introduce prohibited substances under the guise of everyday snacks. "As parents, if your kids and young ones always crave for cookies and gummies, you may have to pay a little more attention. There may be more to it than ordinary cookies and gummies," Babafemi advised, sharing images of seized packages.

The warning comes in the wake of a significant interception by the Nigeria Customs Service at the Tin Can Island Port in Lagos. Officers discovered two 40-foot containers filled with large quantities of cannabis-infused products. These items were concealed among legitimate imports such as used vehicles, generators, batteries, and fabrics.

The seized consignment included thousands of "Cookies Delta 8 Gummies" in various flavors, described as vegan and hemp-derived, along with other cannabis-infused cookies. The total estimated street value of these products is approximately ₦373.8 million (about $250,000 USD).

NDLEA officials have identified these products, which originated from the United States, as an emerging public health threat. They noted that the appealing packaging and flavors are designed to attract children, students, and young people, increasing the risk of accidental consumption of concentrated cannabis. The confiscated items have since been handed over to the NDLEA for further action.
