Nigerian Engineers Kick Off National Games to Promote Fitness and Unity

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has officially kicked off its 2026 National Engineering Games in Abuja, an annual event designed to promote healthy living, professional networking, and unity among engineers nationwide. The games, first introduced in 2011, provide a crucial platform for engineers to de-stress from their demanding professional lives while encouraging physical fitness and overall wellness.

When we launched this programme in 2011, it was with a dual intent: first, to give our engineers who work tirelessly across all sectors of the economy a well-deserved opportunity to take a break from their demanding schedules, engage in physical activity, and promote overall fitness and wellness.

Ali Rabiu, the NSE President, emphasized the dual purpose of the games: offering engineers a much-needed break and fostering physical activity. He highlighted that the event has evolved into a significant venue for social interaction and professional networking, bringing together engineers with government officials, private sector operators, and members of the diplomatic community. This interaction is vital for collaboration and development within the profession and beyond.

Rabiu noted the steady growth of the initiative, which has become a celebration of sportsmanship and healthy living, reflecting the unity, discipline, and strength inherent in the engineering profession. This year's edition continues the tradition of the annual marathon, established in 2025 in honor of former NSE President Habu Gumel, acknowledging his significant contributions to sports administration and the engineering field.

The Chairman of the 2026 National Engineering Games Committee, Giandomenico Massari, described the event as more than just a competition. Massari stressed that promoting physical fitness, mental alertness, and social interaction is essential, as healthy professionals are key to national development, especially in a field responsible for designing, building, and sustaining societal infrastructure.
