Nigerian government: Students abducted by Islamic militants in May have been rescued

The Nigerian government has announced the successful rescue of students who were abducted by Islamic militants in May. The operation concluded after more than 50 days, bringing relief to the nation and the affected families.

Authorities reported that over 40 people were initially taken in the incident in the southwestern state of Ojo. Sadly, one teacher who was abducted along with the students was killed shortly after the kidnapping. The government confirmed the arrest of eight militants involved in the abduction, while several others were killed during the operation.

President Bola Tinubu hailed the successful military operation, stating it ended a siege of over 50 days. He noted the relief felt by the nation and particularly the families impacted by the ordeal. This kidnapping in southern Nigeria marked an escalation of the country's security crisis, as most abductions had previously occurred in the northern regions.

School abductions are a recurring issue in Nigeria, with militant groups frequently targeting children to pressure the government and extort ransoms. The incident in Ojo occurred in the same week as another mass kidnapping of children in Borno state, a region considered the epicenter of Nigeria's security challenges.
