Nigerian governor urges corps members to build unity across diversity

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has called on National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed to the state to leverage their orientation camp experience to foster lasting friendships that transcend ethnic and regional divides. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream II corps members, Eno highlighted the crucial role their interactions could play in shaping Nigeria's future.

Represented by Emmanuel Akpabio, Director of Youth Development, the governor stressed that the unity, peace, and progress of Nigeria are partly contingent on how well the corps members maximize their camp experience. He urged them to ensure their contributions extend beyond ethnic, religious, and linguistic boundaries, embracing diversity as a source of strength. "Our country looks to you for fresh ideas, renewed hope and the promise of a brighter future," Eno stated, encouraging harmonious coexistence and mutual respect.

The governor emphasized that Nigeria's youth have the potential to demonstrate that peaceful coexistence is achievable and that the nation's founding ideals of a just, united, and indivisible country are attainable. He assured the corps members of the state government's unwavering commitment to their welfare and security throughout their service year.

Governor Eno acknowledged the current state of infrastructure at the orientation camp and promised that renovations would commence shortly. He reassured the corps members that their lives and property, along with those of all state residents, would be adequately protected against harassment or intimidation. The State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs Akuagbaogu Rosemary, also congratulated the corps members on reaching this significant milestone.
