Nigerian man arraigned in Ghana over alleged bank robbery plot

Augustine Maazi, a Nigerian national, appeared before Accra Circuit Court 8 in Ghana as proceedings continued over an alleged plot to rob three banks in Accra's Labone area. He faces eight counts, including conspiracy to commit robbery, and has pleaded not guilty.

Maazi was arrested on August 13 after the Ghana Police Service said it had foiled a plan to attack GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank. Police said they received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. that a gang was preparing to target the banks and deployed officers to the area.

Suspected gang members were later seen in vehicles parked near the banks. According to the account reported by The Punch, one vehicle sped away after its occupants noticed police, triggering a chase that ended with Maazi's arrest. Another occupant escaped. Occupants of a second vehicle allegedly tried to flee while firing at police, leading to a shootout in which two suspects were killed.

Police recovered a Toyota Highlander, a Hyundai Tucson, and a pistol, according to the report. Maazi had previously been denied bail and ordered to remain in police custody until September 2, when he was brought back to court.

GCB Bank disputed part of the police account, saying its Labone branch was not targeted. "GCB Bank wishes to clarify that no robbery or attempted robbery took place at our Labone Branch or on the Bank’s premises," the bank said. It added that no customer, staff member, funds, or property had been affected.
