Nigerian military conducts 7,062 operations and kills 1,487 terrorists

Nigeria’s military says it conducted 7,062 security operations across the country during July and August, killing 1,487 terrorists and insurgents and rescuing 777 kidnapped victims.

Major General Samaila Uba, the Defence Director of Defence Information, gave the figures in Abuja at a joint briefing involving security and law-enforcement agencies. He said the operations combined land, air and maritime efforts against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, arms trafficking, oil theft and other crimes.

Troops arrested 354 suspects and recovered 91 firearms, 1,331 rounds of ammunition and 44 improvised explosive devices, Uba said. The military also conducted targeted raids, clearance operations, intelligence-led missions and coordinated rescues.

In the northeast, troops from Operation HADIN KAI killed 309 Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters and arrested suspected collaborators and logistics facilitators. Uba said troops rescued hundreds of people from terrorist enclaves, while pressure in several locations led fighters and their families to surrender.

The military reported operations across all six geopolitical zones, including efforts against separatist violence, crude oil theft and illegal refining. It also cited nine dialogue and peace-building initiatives, 15 meetings with traditional and religious leaders, and 13 cases of misinformation that it said had been identified and countered. Uba said no major border or transnational security incident, critical infrastructure vandalism, prison break or threat to pipelines, railways and highways occurred during the period.
