Nigerian woman arrested in India with cocaine worth N40.9 million

Indian police arrested Lagos resident Emmanuel Joy in Indore after allegedly finding 57.18 grams of cocaine in a transparent bag inside her luggage. Authorities valued the drug at more than 2.9 million rupees, or about N40.9 million.

Chandan Nagar police reportedly stopped Joy near IT Park, Sinhasa, during increased checks ahead of the Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami celebrations. Officers became suspicious after noticing a foreign woman carrying a black bag. Police said her answers to questions were unsatisfactory, leading to a search conducted in the presence of female officers.

News18 Hindi reported that Joy had arrived in India from Nigeria on Aug. 14 with a seven-month business visa. She was living in Bandra East, Mumbai, where she worked at a hair salon with her sister. Police said she had travelled to Indore to supply cocaine.

During questioning, Joy allegedly told investigators that she bought the cocaine cheaply and planned to sell it at a higher price in Indore. Police are independently verifying that account. She has been charged under Sections 8 and 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and was remanded in custody after appearing in court.

Investigators have examined her passport, visa and immigration records. They are also reviewing her mobile phone and other digital data to determine who bought the cocaine, who was due to receive it in Indore and whether others were involved in the alleged supply chain between Mumbai and Indore.
