NIMASA Reaffirmed Commitment to Strengthening Seafarers’ Documentation, Maritime Digitalisation

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has reiterated its dedication to improving seafarers' documentation and advancing maritime digitalization. This commitment was emphasized during a four-day study visit by officials from The Gambia Maritime Administration (GMA).

Officials from both agencies engaged in discussions covering the issuance of seafarers' medical certificates, examination procedures, and the granting of Certificates of Proficiency. The focus was on strengthening the credibility, integrity, and international acceptance of Nigeria's seafarer certification system. The visit underscored the value of regional cooperation in developing efficient, secure, and globally compliant seafarer certification processes.

We are delighted to share our experiences in digitalizing seafarers’ documentation and certification processes. The decision by our Gambian colleagues to choose NIMASA for this study visit is a recognition of the progress Nigeria has made in maritime administration and human capacity development. There is always something to learn from one another. Such engagements strengthen regional cooperation and help build a more efficient and globally competitive maritime sector across Africa.

Engr. Fatai Taiye Adeyemi, Executive Director of Operations at NIMASA, who represented the Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, described the visit as a testament to the strong relationship between Nigeria and The Gambia and the growing collaboration between their maritime administrations. He noted that such exchanges offer valuable opportunities for knowledge sharing and capacity building within Africa's maritime sector.

Mr. Falu Sey, leader of the Gambian delegation and Manager of Ship Registry and Seafarers Affairs at GMA, explained that NIMASA was chosen due to Nigeria's significant advancements in maritime development and digital transformation. Sey stated that the practical demonstrations and technical sessions provided valuable insights that will aid The Gambia in strengthening its maritime administration and improving service delivery.
