Nine-year-old Australian girl fatally shot by police in Pakistan

A tragic incident in Pakistan's Punjab province resulted in the fatal shooting of a nine-year-old Australian girl by police who mistakenly identified her family's vehicle as belonging to criminals. The family was visiting relatives in Chakwal when they were confronted by armed robbers outside a relative's home.

Local media reported that the girl's mother was handing over approximately 500,000 rupees ($2,500) worth of jewelry to the robbers when a police officer, returning to a nearby station, witnessed the event. The officer exchanged fire with the two suspects before they fled on a motorcycle.

As the family attempted to drive away in their rental car, additional police officers responding to the scene opened fire, believing the vehicle was associated with the fleeing suspects, according to a police official. The girl and her family were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Her father and brother sustained injuries and were transferred to Benazir Bhutto Hospital in Rawalpindi for surgery. Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the family of the deceased and the two injured Australians, expressing its deepest condolences during this difficult time.
