  • The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) pledged to collaborate with the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission (GOSERC) to improve electricity supply.
  • NISO's Managing Director highlighted Gombe's potential as a commercial hub and the need for increased power to support its growing economy and industrial park.
  • GOSERC aims to increase the state's electricity intake from the current 30MW to a potential 200MW.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has committed to working with the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission (GOSERC) to develop market frameworks aimed at enhancing electricity supply within Gombe State. This collaboration was formalized during a visit by GOSERC management to NISO's headquarters in Abuja.

Bello Mohammed, NISO's Managing Director and CEO, recognized Gombe as a significant commercial hub in the Northeast region. He emphasized the state's considerable opportunities for collaboration, particularly as it seeks to expand electricity access to fuel economic activities. Mohammed noted that Gombe's burgeoning commercial landscape and the ongoing development of an industrial park necessitate improved power supply.

"Gombe State is comparatively a hub for commercial activities within the North-east. The establishment of the industrial park by the governor is quite inspiring and warrants increased power supply to the state," Mohammed stated. He assured GOSERC of NISO's full support in exploring avenues to improve electricity supply in the state and developing a sound business model for accessing more power.

Earlier, GOSERC Chairman Dr. Usman Arabi explained that the visit aimed to identify areas for collaboration to boost electricity supply to Gombe. He highlighted that the state currently receives approximately 30MW of power, despite having the capacity and requirement for up to 200MW. This significant gap underscores the urgency for improved infrastructure and supply.

NISO's Executive Director of Market Operations, Dr. Edmond Eje, advised GOSERC to ensure that all licensed distribution companies operating within Gombe register with NISO as market participants. This is crucial given their interface with the national grid. NISO's Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services, Mr. Babajide Ibironke, reaffirmed the system operator's commitment to continued cooperation and an open-door policy towards GOSERC.

What I can assure you is that NISO will support you 100 per cent in exploring how to improve electricity supply in the state.
