No child should be denied quality education, says UBEC

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has declared that difficult circumstances should not prevent any Nigerian child from receiving a quality education. Dr. Aisha Garba, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, highlighted this principle during the official opening of the rehabilitated Alternative High School for Girls in Agboju, Lagos.

This project addresses the persistent issues hindering basic and secondary education in Nigeria, such as school dropout rates, poverty, and displacement. The school's establishment is particularly crucial for girls and young women who leave conventional schooling due to pregnancy, early marriage, or family obligations, finding it difficult to return.

Dr. Garba described the rehabilitation, supported by UBEC, as more than just an infrastructure upgrade. She views it as a vital opportunity for girls and young women to resume their education and develop their potential. "A girl whose circumstances prevented her from completing her education should be given another opportunity," she stated, adding that every child deserves a chance to succeed.

She emphasized that girls who drop out should not be considered failures and young mothers seeking to continue their studies should not feel their chance has passed. The Alternative High School for Girls aims to provide these young women with the means to return to learning, gain valuable skills, and build productive futures. "Let this not simply be a place where girls attend classes. Let it be a place where hope is restored, confidence is built and the future is renewed," Garba urged.

The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, is actively pursuing reforms to enhance education quality, broaden access, and ensure no child is left behind. These efforts include investments in school infrastructure, learning facilities, teacher training, and programs specifically for vulnerable and out-of-school children.
