Donald Trump's move to direct federal agents to investigate California Governor Gavin Newsom is not surprising in the United States, where Trump often uses his power to harm perceived enemies, typically as revenge for past grievances. However, this particular case appears different, as Newsom represents a future threat to Trump.

Newsom, in his autobiography, recalled his first meeting with Trump in November 2018. Trump, eager to impress, took the then-governor-elect on Air Force One, boasting about the plane's amenities and even subtly demeaning his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Today, the relationship between the two is icy. Newsom has become one of Trump's most prominent public critics, often mimicking Trump's social media tone and frequently mocking him.

As Newsom concludes his second term as governor this fall, it is widely expected that he will run for president in 2028. Trump seems fixated on the younger Newsom and California, consistently referring to the governor as "Newscum" on Truth Social and baselessly claiming that all elections in the Democratic-dominated state are rigged. On Monday, Newsom revealed that federal agents from the FBI, IRS, and prosecutors have been questioning his relatives, friends, and former associates for some time.

"They are digging through years of randomly selected documents," Newsom claimed, though the Justice Department has not confirmed this. The investigations reportedly focus on Newsom's wife, documentary filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom, but the ultimate goal is to harm him. Siebel Newsom herself is portrayed as an ideal target for Trump's camp, often labeled as "woke" for her advocacy on issues like gender equality and her title as California's "First Partner."
