No Immediate Semiconductor Tariffs, US Trade Representative Says, Citing Need for Careful Timing

While the immediate imposition of new semiconductor tariffs by the United States is not on the horizon, the strategic importance of such measures for national security and economic competitiveness remains a key focus. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized that while the timing and scope of any future tariffs must be carefully calibrated, the ultimate objective is clear: to incentivize the relocation of semiconductor supply chains back to American soil and bolster domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Greer acknowledged the complexity of the global semiconductor supply chain, which has evolved over decades of internationalization. The administration is mindful of not disrupting the ongoing efforts of companies to reshore their operations. Therefore, a measured approach is being adopted, allowing for the import of certain chip quantities during this transition phase to prevent short-term supply chain imbalances.

This policy direction is complemented by significant private sector investment. Micron Technology has officially commenced production of its "1-alpha DRAM" wafers at its facility in Manassas, Virginia. This advanced memory chip process is crucial for a wide range of applications, including AI, and represents a tangible step in rebuilding US semiconductor manufacturing prowess. Micron's substantial investment in the US, bolstered by government support through the CHIPS and Science Act, signals a strong commitment to revitalizing the domestic semiconductor industry.
