No Parallel in the Literature: ALS Patient Undergoes Double Valve Surgery in Samsun

Doctors at Samsun City Hospital performed simultaneous aortic and mitral valve replacement on a 43-year-old patient diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The patient, Oktay Asal, had severely deteriorated aortic and mitral valves. Surgeons replaced both valves with mechanical prostheses during the same operation.

Emrah Ereren of Samsun University’s Faculty of Medicine said he could find no comparable case in Turkish or global medical literature involving simultaneous mechanical replacement of both valves in a patient with ALS.
