No qualified Nigerian will miss higher education over poverty, says FG

Nigeria's Federal Government has pledged that financial hardship will no longer prevent qualified students from accessing higher education. Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, stated that President Bola Tinubu's administration has eliminated financial barriers through student-focused reforms and substantial investments exceeding ₦1 trillion in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

During a meeting with the National Committee for the Advancement of Occupational Therapy, Audiology and Speech and Language Therapy Education, Alausa emphasized the administration's commitment to providing quality higher education for all qualified Nigerians, irrespective of their economic background. He noted that President Tinubu has prioritized human capital development, making education accessible and removing obstacles that previously hindered many young Nigerians from pursuing tertiary studies.

"This President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has opened up access to students so that not having money, or coming from an indigent family, or your parents being poor, will no longer stop you from achieving the opportunities you can achieve in life. Education is no longer a barrier for students in this country," Alausa stated. He added that these reforms aim to empower young Nigerians to contribute significantly to national development.

The government has backed its commitment with significant investments, allocating over ₦1 trillion to the tertiary education sector in the past two years. This includes ₦250 billion for new student hostels, over ₦150 billion for rehabilitating existing facilities like hostels and classrooms, and more than ₦130 billion for medical school rehabilitation and capacity expansion. Additionally, ₦52 billion was approved for modern equipment in 18 medical schools, and nearly ₦30 billion invested in establishing 11 medical simulation laboratories to enhance practical training.
