Nonghyup Economic Holdings checks Chuseok food supply and prices

Nonghyup Economic Holdings is stepping up preparations for Chuseok, South Korea’s major harvest holiday, with a focus on keeping staple agricultural and livestock products available and prices stable.

The group will run an agricultural and livestock supply and demand control room through the 23rd. It plans to track supply, demand and price movements in real time and respond to changing market conditions.

Contract-grown farm products will be supplied at up to 3.5 times their normal volume. Slaughter volumes at Nonghyup livestock auction markets will also rise by as much as 1.2 times.

Food safety checks will take place at Nonghyup Hanaro Mart stores and other agricultural and livestock cooperatives. Inspectors will review origin labeling, shelf-life management and whether food is being recycled. A comprehensive food safety control room will also test for hazardous substances, including pesticide residues, food-poisoning bacteria and heavy metals.
