Normandy D-Day beaches inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage site

The beaches of Normandy, etched into history by the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944, have officially been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This prestigious designation marks the culmination of a nearly two-decade-long effort to preserve the memory of the pivotal battles that led to the liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany.

The inscribed area spans just over 80 kilometers of coastline across the Manche and Calvados departments in northwestern France. It encompasses the five landing beaches, Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword, along with significant sites like Pointe du Hoc, the Longues-sur-Mer German artillery battery, and the artificial harbor of Arromanches-les-Bains, known as Port Mulberry. Numerous associated military cemeteries and monuments are also part of the protected heritage.

These beaches are directly and materially associated with the landings (...) which played a decisive role in the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi occupation.

During the UNESCO session in Busan, South Korea, an International Council on Monuments and Sites (Icomos) representative highlighted the sites' direct and material association with the landings, emphasizing their decisive role in freeing Western Europe. The representative noted that these sites symbolically commemorate the immense human sacrifice made to overthrow a deeply entrenched authoritarian occupation.
