Norrie stunned as six Britons lose on first day

The opening day of the tournament proved challenging for British tennis players, with six competitors exiting the competition. Among the notable matches, wildcard Harriet Dart put up a strong fight against former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Despite a gritty comeback, Dart ultimately fell 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in an entertaining two-and-a-half-hour contest on Court One.

Dart's match was moved to the main show court after another British player withdrew. She made the most of the opportunity, pushing the world number 31 to a deciding set. Ostapenko will now face either Antonia Ruzic or Darja Semenistaja in the next round.

Elsewhere, 17-year-old British wildcard Mika Stojsavljevic lost decisively to the experienced Belinda Bencic, the 2021 Olympic champion and 11th seed. Felix Gill and Max Basing also experienced defeat in their Grand Slam main-draw debuts, falling to seeded opponents Rafael Jodar and Shintaro Mochizuki, respectively. Alicia Dudeney also lost her first-round match.
