North Chungcheong Province party leadership elections intensify for both Democratic and People Power parties

Political parties in South Korea's North Chungcheong Province are gearing up for heated elections to select new provincial party chairpersons, with less than a month remaining until the June 3 local elections.

The Democratic Party is seeing a close contest between Lee Young-shin, former vice chairwoman of the Cheongju City Council, and Song Jae-bong, a first-term lawmaker representing the Cheongwon district. Lee is campaigning on a platform of "rebellion of ordinary party members," advocating for change within the party. Song, meanwhile, is emphasizing "creating results for the provincial party" and promising to establish a cooperative system between the party, government, and the National Assembly to expedite solutions for local issues.

The Democratic Party's provincial leadership election is scheduled for June 30-31, with the elected chairperson serving a two-year term. The party's election campaign officially began on June 23.

Simultaneously, the People Power Party is also facing a competitive race for its provincial chairperson position. The candidates are Kim Young-hwan, former governor of North Chungcheong Province, and Kim Dong-won, chairman of the Cheongju Heungdeok District Party chapter. Initially, there was a push to appoint Kim Dong-won unopposed, but Kim Young-hwan's entry has intensified the race.

Kim Young-hwan expressed his commitment to "building a party that acts to protect the values and history of conservatism, fostering a sense of camaraderie among members, and dedicating himself to building a winning party for the next general election." The People Power Party's election will take place on June 27, with the chairperson serving a one-year term.

Adding to the political fervor, the Cheongju Seo-won district party chairmanship has become a point of contention following the resignation of Kim Jin-mo, the district's party chairman, amid an investigation into a middle school student prostitution scandal involving a Cheongju city councilor. Several individuals, including former North Chungcheong Province political special advisor Son In-seok, former National Police Agency Commissioner General Yoon Hee-geun, and former Cheongju Mayor Lee Beom-seok, are being mentioned as potential candidates for the vacant chairmanship.
