North Korea fires ballistic missile as Seoul and Washington plan joint drills

North Korea fired a ballistic missile toward the sea off the Korean Peninsula's east coast on Wednesday, according to South Korea's military. The missile was launched from the Wonsan area around 6 a.m. local time and appeared to land outside Japan's exclusive economic zone. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the launch and stated that the military has increased surveillance and is maintaining readiness for potential additional launches, while closely coordinating with the United States and Japan.

This missile test comes at a critical juncture, as South Korea and the U.S. are scheduled to commence major joint military drills from August 17 to 27. These exercises are designed to counter North Korea's evolving nuclear and weapons capabilities. Pyongyang has historically denounced these annual drills as provocations, signaling potential escalation in rhetoric or action from the North.

North Korea's state media recently condemned Japan's latest defense white paper, labeling it a document aimed at reviving militarism. Pyongyang asserted that Tokyo is using an unfounded portrayal of North Korea as a security threat to justify its own arms buildup. This year, North Korea has conducted a series of tests, including short-range ballistic missiles, artillery rockets, and other tactical weapons. Last week, the South Korean military reported another short-range ballistic missile launch by the North.

Adding to regional tensions, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Moscow allegedly used a North Korean ballistic missile during a recent Russian attack on a Ukrainian steel plant, which resulted in the deaths of seven workers. This claim, if substantiated, would indicate North Korea's involvement in supplying weapons for the conflict in Ukraine.
