North Korea issues 40-degree heatwave warning as peninsula swelters

North Korea is bracing for intense heat as the country issues heatwave warnings for numerous regions, with some areas forecast to experience daytime temperatures as high as 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). The warnings come as the nation transitions into a full-blown heatwave period following the monsoon season.

The official Rodong Sinmun newspaper reported on July 30 that the State Meteorological Administration has issued a "heatwave warning" for most central and southern areas, as well as some northern regions, effective from July 29 through August 4. Specific areas under the warning include Ryongsong District in Pyongyang, and Bongcheon, Pyeongsan, and Icheon counties, along with Kaepung District in North Hwanghae Province.

Additionally, a "high-temperature advisory" has been issued for parts of the central eastern coast, including Chonnae and Jeongpyeong counties, until August 2. The meteorological authorities predict that most regions will experience muggy weather with daytime highs reaching 33-35 degrees Celsius and relative humidity exceeding 70%.

Authorities are urging citizens to exercise extreme caution to prevent heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and sunstroke. Recommendations include limiting outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and ensuring adequate fluid intake. This follows a period of heavy rainfall and strong wind advisories, indicating a swift shift in weather patterns across the Korean Peninsula.
