North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has declared an "exponential" increase in the nation's nuclear capabilities, stating that the production of weapons-grade nuclear material has more than doubled over the last five years. During a visit to a new nuclear material production facility, Kim outlined an "ambitious future plan" to significantly enhance the state's nuclear forces.

North Korea considers its nuclear arsenal essential for protection against perceived threats from South Korean and U.S. forces stationed in the region. Kim described the planned advancements as an "amazing, successful change" and a "historic event" that marks an epochal milestone in rapidly upgrading their nuclear capabilities.

The country has firmly rejected international pressure to disarm, maintaining that its path toward developing nuclear weapons is "irreversible." North Korea withdrew from the Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1993 and has since conducted six nuclear tests. It is believed to possess dozens of nuclear warheads and faces multiple United Nations sanctions as a result of its nuclear program.
