Northern Christian groups say they are not rivals to CAN

The Northern Christians Religious Assembly has moved to dispel any suggestion that it is challenging the Christian Association of Nigeria, declaring that CAN remains the umbrella body for Christians in Nigeria.

National President Archbishop JohnPraise Daniel made the clarification during the inauguration and investiture of NOCRELA’s Niger State chapter in Minna. Represented by the group’s National Public Secretary, Rev. Bulus Yayaha, Daniel said new Christian groups could emerge, but should add their voices to CAN’s work rather than create division.

“NOCRELA is not another organisation that is in rivalry with CAN, rather, it is a movement that compliments the workings of CAN as our umbrella Body,” he said. He added that the assembly’s role was to stand firmly for the Christian faith and support CAN.

The Chairman of CAN in Niger State, Most Rev. Bulus Yohanna, said Christians needed credible voices to speak for them in the state. Represented by his deputy, Rev. Joshua Marcus, Yohanna said diverse groups could exist while still agreeing to speak with one voice. He also called on Christians to support their leaders and participate more actively in issues affecting the church.

In earlier remarks, inauguration committee chairman Evangelist Charles Amatu said the creation of the Niger chapter had been delayed, noting that other northern states had already established their executives. State chairman Rev. Samuel Shaba separately inaugurated the women’s wing, led by Hon. Deborah Salawu, and urged it to work with the state executive.
